Open work. Transformations of the Frey’s First house in Palm Springs 1940-1963

Authors

Abstract

This research focuses on the analysis of the different stages of the first house that Albert Frey built for himself in Palm Springs. A project that was developed over 23 years, and whose successive transformations and additions can be understood as a journey in stages, which was a reflection of the architect's own life and the way of designing, since Frey tested all the architectural mechanisms, that characterize his work, in it. The starting hypothesis is the use by the architect of an ‘open work’ strategy, according to the concept enunciated by Umberto Eco. An experimental house, not only in the technical aspect, but in terms of the method and the use of design instruments. The article is structured using a methodology which consists of explaining the building from the construction periods of this transformable house, identifying and analyzing the architectural tools used.
