Abstract

Japan is the main actor in international economic relations in the Asian region. However, in general terms, Latin American trade relations have historically been oriented to the United States and Europe, and trade flows with the Asia-Pacific region have not been really significant. The only exception is precisely Japan, although in a much lesser way than with traditional markets, but in recent years there has been a certain increase in trade from the Latin American region to Japan. The same could be expected for the Newly Industrialized Asian Countries. In the specific case of Peru, even though the issue of the Pacific Basin has been gaining increasing importance, especially since 1980, there is still a lack of awareness about its dimensions and perspectives.
