Abstract

Adopting a multidimensional approach to design in the search for social and ecological transformation implies making a substantive shift with respect to the usual way of conceiving its nature. In this sense, it is argued that a means to work under this point of view is to consider the contributions of the Complex Systems Theory, which have ceased to orbit around the axes of hard sciences such as mathematics, engineering, biology or artificial intelligence, etc., to begin to enter the field of design. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to explore and make evident the relationship between design and complex systems. The first part of the text briefly presents some theoretical arguments that contribute to the justification of a change of epistemological-methodological approach in current practice, and secondly, it identifies some ways in which systemic criteria or principles can be integrated into the process in order to show their possible links. The main contribution - obtained by weaving these relationships from the conceptual framework - is to establish the basis for implementing mechanisms or matrices that facilitate the diagnosis and analysis of problems and that can be applied in collaborative design projects.
