Abstract

In the field of social policy implementation, the participation of the actors involved in the Design process constitutes one of the most significant challenges for contemporary designers. Starting from the systematization of a participatory Design experience carried out in the city of Valparaíso with low-income senior citizens, within the framework of a social project that promotes healthy eating and self-sufficiency for this population group, this paper reflects on the Design literacy process that was required for fruitful dialogue and cooperation between designer, other professionals, and senior citizens. The method of participation and Design literacy that was adopted considered, as its basic procedure, holding workshops to define the project’s communication system. Five are the participatively processed variables that configure its visual syntax, namely: meaning, readability, images, color and organization of Design elements. The construction of a space for dialogue and cooperation between the various actors involved is distinguished as a sine qua non condition and critical knot for the processes of participatory Design and Design literacy to bear fruit in a socially appropriate way.
