Hammers in search of a nail: Characterization of legislative initiatives on disinformation in Chile

Abstract
This article presents a qualitative and quantitative study of the bills drafted in the Chilean Chamber of Deputies and the Chilean Senate addressing the problem of online disinformation. Through a systematization of these initiatives, we identify the main objectives that justify these attempts at regulation and the instruments most used by the legislators to fight disinformation (punitive, reparatory or preventive). We also analyze whether the legislators considered the adverse effects that the regulation of the so-called «fake news» could cause on fundamental rights such as freedom of expression.
