Community Management of the Studentization Process. The Case of the René Schneider Neighborhood in Talca

Authors

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze the different manifestations of the studentification process and its relationship with the community dimension in the René Schneider neighborhood of Talca, capital of the Maule Region (Chile), between the years 2007 and 2019. For this, conventional and participatory research techniques were applied that included observation, mapping, conducting commented tours and individual and group in-depth interviews. The findings show that, as a result of certain morphological and spatial conditions of the neighborhood and the role of community networks, the physical, economic, social and cultural changes that the settlement of university students has produced in the Rene Schneider population have been reduced in their negative aspects. The community-based management of the studentization process, which translates into a process governed by the community of traditional inhabitants, constitutes a novelty in comparison to other Chilean and international case studies.
